The Strathcona Hotel is looking to hire a full-time designer to work alongside various teams across their many venues at 919 Douglas St Victoria. The position will be in office, with a semi-flexible schedule based around core hours of 11am – 4pm Tuesday to Friday.
Our ideal candidate will have at least three years of design experience (education, employment and/or freelance work). The majority of the work will use the Adobe Creative Suite, primarily using InDesign with assets created or edited in Illustrator and Photoshop. They would be creating for both digital and print media and be comfortable using inhouse printers and working with external printers for large format and specialty print jobs.
This position requires a high level of communication skills and comprehension of verbal and written English. The graphic designer will work alongside the Events Coordinator as part of the Events and Media team but will also be working on projects with personnel from the kitchen, beverage, maintenance, accommodations, retail, accounting, and housekeeping departments as well as external partners.
The design projects that this position would be responsible for are quite varied and require a designer that is flexible and is skilled at understanding different target audiences. Many of the projects will have materials supplied (with various levels of quality), and others will require the designer to source or create materials.
Examples of projects this position will be responsible for include:
· posters for touring artists, local acts, and in house events
· brand development for our many venues and initiatives
· food and beverage menu design, edits, and printing
· internal documentation such as safety manuals and employee forms
· advertising with local print partners and online
· signage and venue decorations
· some light web work using Wordpress
· ensuring a reliable stock of paper and other materials
The previous Graphic Designer will be remaining with the company in another roll, and as such this position will have the benefit of a full training period and a senior designer who is available to answer questions and assist in a limited capacity. However, it is intended that this will be the sole graphics position with the company, and the person in this role must be comfortable in such an environment.
