Description

Position Purpose

 

The Director of Engineering is responsible for the operation, repair and maintenance of all buildings, machinery, and equipment of the property. The Director of Engineering is also responsible for all aspects of the Engineering department to include the proper operation, maintenance, and repair of all HVAC, refrigeration, plumbing, electrical, irrigation, life safety, and mechanical equipment/systems. This position will develop, coordinate, and monitor all guest rooms, public spaces, equipment, and PM programs to ensure the reliability, safety, and comfort of all staff and guests. The Director of Engineering will hire, supervise, train, and manage all Engineering staff. Leads the emergency response team for all facility issues. This position is also responsible for CAPEX funding of building projects in accordance with business strategy.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Overseeing the execution of a project from initial brainstorming session to finished product
  • Oversee and supervise Engineering/Maintenance staff, training, coaching/counseling, and performance management to ensure work productivity and quality standards, assigning roles and establishing work schedules
  • Training new team members and providing technical expertise to teams in crisis
  • Creating and monitoring budgets for engineering projects
  • Reporting their team's progress to the General Manager
  • Making and approving financial decisions within the job scop
  • Communicating the strategic vision to directors and managers and ensuring that each individual team's work aligns with the company's broader goals.
  • Completes weekly work schedule for department.
  • Develops and manages department and capital budget and projects; ensures departmental spending and payroll remains within budgeted guidelines.
  • Monitors and controls utility consumption.
  • Ensures compliance with government codes and regulations; maintains special permits and licenses are required.
  • Act fast to resolve emergency issues (e.g. power outages/water leaks)
  • Find ways to reduce hotel operating costs
  • Develop, coordinate, and monitor all guest rooms and public spaces, equipment, and Preventive Maintenance programs to ensure the reliability, safety, and comfort of all staff and guests
  • Maintains accurate records and inventory of equipment and other systems on property.
  • Properly handle all administrative work with regards to interviewing, hiring, performance appraisals, and terminations of staff
  • Develops, maintains, and monitors all safety policies, procedures, and programs for the property while coordinating with other departments necessary work and training required to maintain safety and health standards as set forth by hotel policies and other legal requirements.
  • Regularly inspects property, equipment, and work areas to ensure conformance to established standards.
  • Oversees repairs to various equipment, replacement of electronics, painting, or writing work.
  • Oversees ongoing and emergency repairs required to always keep the property in a marketable condition.
  • Negotiate contracts for property operations; manages contractor/vendor work.
  • Interact as needed with management, contractors, vendors, and guests.
  • Responsibility to ensure staff is provided with necessary tools to perform troubleshooting, regular maintenance, and repairs.
  • Conducts regular inspections via walk- throughs of public areas, back of the house areas, guest rooms, and exterior areas.
  • Resolves or finds resolutions to guest complaints effectively and timely.
  • Monitors and maintains life safety equipment, i.e. fire alarms, fire extinguishers, etc. to ensure are in and in proper working condition.
  • Compiles and prepares reports for managements review and use.
  • Will be on call 24/7 for hotel emergencies.

  • Operational Skills:
  • Technical knowledge in electrical, plumbing, HVAC, boilers, and refrigeration required

  • Experience in administrative processes (e.g. budgeting, performance management)
  • Hotel maintenance background required
  • Operational skills are required to know all types of maintenance jobs like repairing, working of equipment, engineering, painting, etc.
  • Must be able to follow directions with focus to detail, speed, and accuracy.
  • Must be able to multi-task in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Must have ability to input data and access information on the computer.
  • Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Word, & Outlook

  • Must have prior experience as an Assistant Chief or Chief/Director or Engineering in a full-service hotel.

 

 

Qualifications

High school diploma or GED; 6 years experience in the engineering and maintenance or related professional area; experience in HVAC-R/Electrical/Plumbing, life-safety, and mechanical equipment systems.

OR

2-year degree from an accredited university in Building and Construction, Engineering, Mechanics, or related major; 4 years experience in the engineering and maintenance or related professional area; experience in HVAC-R/Electrical/Plumbing, life-safety, and mechanical equipment systems.

 

Certification: Current and unencumbered CA Drivers License
