SUMMARY
The Assistant Director of Engineering ("Subdirector/a de Ingeniería") supports the Director in overseeing maintenance operations, staff training, budgets, projects, preventative maintenance, and energy conservation. Responsible for the building and grounds with focus on safety, security, and asset protection, the Assistant Director of Engineering coordinates with departments, attends meetings, and tracks project progress. They address maintenance issues based on guest and staff feedback, manage staff and contractor assignments, and improve satisfaction through clear communication and training.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Assists in supervising the day-to-day operations of Engineering and related departments.
  • Contributes to overseeing the maintenance of the physical infrastructure, including equipment, refrigeration, HVAC, plumbing, water treatment, electrical, and life safety systems.
  • Assume control of the Engineering Department when the Director of Engineering is unavailable.
  • Direct and assist workers in the maintenance and repairs of the property.
  • Handle various administrative tasks within the maintenance department.
  • Work with third-party vendors to obtain quotes and service agreements and coordinate work.
  • Monitors timeliness and quality of completion of repair work orders.
  • Ensure projects are completed on time and according to specifications by estimating worker-hour requirements and scheduling engineering staff to complete all work.
  • Schedule engineering staff for routine maintenance, covering tasks such as painting, plumbing, electrical work, and HVAC functions.
  • Responds to emergency situations during normal working hours or after hours as needed.
  • Troubleshoot and repair various equipment, including mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, with minimal downtime and inconvenience to guests and staff.
  • Ensure the recording and retention of equipment and utility meter readings daily.
  • Maintain files for Material Data Sheets and train engineers in emergency procedures.
  • Complete work within departmental budget.
  • Identify health and safety hazards, conduct safety training, and ensure compliance with government safety and environmental regulations.
  • Supervise contractor activities during and after repair and follow up with contractors for additional repairs when necessary.
  • Provide building security, respond to emergencies, and assist in evacuations if needed.
  • Assists in effective planning, scheduling, and evaluating preventive maintenance programs.
  • Identify external service needs like painting, repairs, renovations, and equipment replacements, seek proposals, and submits to the Director of Engineering.
  • Selects, submits for approval and orders purchases new equipment, parts, supplies, and other materials needed to maintain the Resort.
  • Attracts, retains, motivates, trains, empowers, and holds accountable the staff in the Engineering Department.
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as directed by the leadership team.

Qualifications


QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least 3 years of experience in the engineering and maintenance or related professional area; strong knowledge in HVAC-R/electrical/plumbing.
  • A minimum of 1 year in a management or supervisory role required. 
  • Must have an unexpired and valid driver's license with no recent violations.
  • Previous similar position in a hotel, or similar business entity preferred.
  • Previous experience in plumbing, electrical, HVAC-R, and kitchen equipment preferred.
  • Requires advanced knowledge of building maintenance and engineering.
  • Availability to work on weekends and holidays is required.
  • Ability to always maintain a friendly, professional, team-oriented, positive demeanor and diplomatic attitude, especially under stress or challenges.
  • Ability to stand, kneel, squat for prolonged periods of time, up to and including the entire shift, and lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
  • Experience in dealing with the public is preferred, such as retail cashier, food industry service, guest service with public contacts, etc.
  • The following position will be filled in accordance with the process set forth in California Labor Code Section 2810.8 and San Diego Municipal Code 311.0101 et. seq.
